Where Tate Modern is contemporary, this is five hundred years of British art. The rooms run in time order, with a dedicated room of Turner's hazy seascapes and the Pre-Raphaelite Ophelia, and it carries on to Hockney and Francis Bacon in the twentieth century. The permanent collection is free, so it suits a rainy hour or two. The riverside walk north toward Parliament makes a good follow-up.
