This square was laid out where the royal palace stood before the 1755 earthquake flattened it. Yellow arcaded ministries frame three sides; the fourth opens straight onto the Tagus, where the Cais das Colunas steps run down into lapping water. Behind the equestrian statue of King José I stands the Rua Augusta Arch, and through it the pedestrian Rua Augusta runs dead straight to Rossio. The top of the arch is a small viewpoint, reached by a lift and a spiral stair, looking over the square, the river and the castle.
