Walk round behind the main hall and the Senbon Torii begin: vermilion gates packed so tight they form a tunnel. Each post carries the inked name of the company or family that donated it, and the path runs nearly 4 km to the summit of Mount Inari. Most people climb to the Yotsutsuji junction halfway up, look out over the city and head back down. Near the entrance there are queues for photos by midday; keep climbing and the crowd thins out fast.
