The sultans moved here from Topkapı in the 1850s. Outside it is white like a European palace; inside it flashes with gilt and crystal. Where Topkapı is an Ottoman sequence of courtyards and kiosks, this is a "mini Versailles" with 285 rooms under one roof. The highlight is the Ceremonial Hall and its 4.5-tonne chandelier, which silences everyone who looks up. Atatürk died in one of the rooms, and its clock is stopped at 9:05, the time of his death.
