Around the Tai O bus terminus, western Lantau

Wood-and-tin houses stand on stilts along the tidal creek in this fishing village. The lanes smell strongly of dried fish and shrimp paste, and stalls sell fish-ball skewers and big doughnuts. At the jetty you can take a 20-minute boat around the stilt houses and out to sea; it's sold as a pink dolphin trip, though few people actually see one. It's at its best at sunset, when the water turns orange.
