A merchant quarter where street names still announce the trade: Hang Bac for silver, Hang Ma for paper offerings, Hang Gai for silk. Four-metre-wide tube houses stand shoulder to shoulder, and on the pavement outside people slurp pho on plastic stools. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings Hang Dao Street is closed from the lake up to Dong Xuan Market and fills with stalls selling clothes, knock-off bags and grilled skewers. Ta Hien beer street is a few steps away, so most people finish with a glass of bia hoi.
