A rusticated wall of giant stone blocks closes off the whole slope above the square. This was the palace the Medici moved into, and inside, the Palatine Gallery hangs Raphaels and Titians frame to frame in gilt. Behind it the Boboli Gardens climb the hill: an amphitheatre, the Neptune fountain, the Buontalenti Grotto encrusted with shells and fake stalactites, and at the top, a view over olive trees to the rooftops and the dome.
