The square in front of Palazzo Vecchio and the entrance to the Uffizi

The square under the Palazzo Vecchio tower, where Florence's politics and drama played out. A David copy guards the palace door; on one side are Ammannati's white marble Neptune fountain and Giambologna's statue of Cosimo I on horseback. The real treat is the Loggia dei Lanzi, the arched porch on the right, where Cellini's bronze Perseus holding Medusa's head and Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women stand as originals under nothing but a roof, free to see. A plaque in the paving near the fountain marks where Savonarola was burned.
