This stone palace stands over the square like a castle wall. It has been Florence's seat of government for over 700 years and part of it is still the town hall. Inside the museum, the big moment is the Hall of the Five Hundred upstairs, its ceiling and walls covered in Medici battle scenes that tip your head back the second you walk in. The Hall of Maps, with its giant globe and painted map cabinets, is another favourite. A separate ticket takes you up the Arnolfo Tower and along the battlements for a high view over the dome and the square.
