The standard way to taste the Highlands from Edinburgh in a day. A small coach leaves early, crosses the empty moorland of Rannoch Moor, threads between the steep walls of Glencoe and drops you in the afternoon at Fort Augustus on the end of Loch Ness. There you walk the canal locks or take a 50-minute cruise. The drive back is more mountains and lochs; expect to spend most of the day watching scenery through the window.
