The fort stands alone on a 37 m rock just outside the walls. Its seaward walls are thick and the side facing the city is deliberately thin, the story goes, so the town could knock it down if a commander ever turned on them. Above the door is the Latin motto 'Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world'. From the top terrace you get the walls, Bokar Tower and the sea in one frame, which is a different picture from anything on the walls themselves. During the Summer Festival it stages Hamlet, and Game of Thrones used it as the outside of the Red Keep.
