A few steps past Pile Gate, a round domed fountain spits water from sixteen stone faces. Onofrio della Cava, a Neapolitan architect, built it in 1438 to end a long aqueduct from the hills. The 1667 earthquake knocked off the carved top, so it looks plainer than it once did. In summer people queue with empty bottles to refill them. It sits right by the wall-ticket stairs, so by midday the photographers have blocked the lane.
