Sand-coloured walls, wooden shutters and square wind towers line a network of canals. The market itself is roofed, so it stays cooler at midday, and the lanes twist between lamp, spice and souvenir shops. Step out onto a bridge and the Burj Al Arab sits right at the end of the canal, the photo most people come for. In the evening the waterside terraces light up and abras glide past.
