In the middle of the Old City stands a chedi like a hill of brown brick. Built in the 15th century to more than 80 metres, it lost its top in a 16th-century earthquake and now looks half sheared away. Nagas run down the stairways and stone elephants ring the base as if holding the whole thing up; the closer you get, the bigger it feels. The Emerald Buddha now in Bangkok's Grand Palace once sat in the eastern niche, where a replica stands today. It stays open and lit until around 10pm, so you can skip the midday heat and come after dark.
