Around 4pm on Sundays, traffic stops on the wide road inside Tha Phae Gate and stalls start unfolding. By five the whole of Ratchadamnoen Road is a slow-moving river of people: elephant trousers, rattan bags, silver jewellery and hand-painted postcards, stall after stall. Temple courtyards along the way turn into food courts with grilled skewers, khao soi and mango sticky rice, and buskers play in the middle of the road. Plenty of visitors say it's cheaper and better stocked than the other night markets, so many save their shopping for this.
