Lai has sold tangyuan, glutinous rice balls, since 1894. The black-sesame tangyuan that ooze when bitten are the headline, but the useful order for travellers is the one- or two-person snack set. For ¥58 you get a run of small bowls: tangyuan, dan dan noodles, chilli-oil wontons, Zhong dumplings and more. Even well past mealtimes, every table on the street side is full. It runs 7 am to 11 pm, so timing is easy.
