The lobby is the Gezira Palace, built in 1869 for guests at the opening of the Suez Canal. Walk in under the cast-iron columns and high ceilings and two room towers from 1982 rise on either side. With 1,064 rooms it's a big operation, and every evening Cairenes gather over shisha and tea in the garden café out front. Zamalek's café streets are walkable from here.
