Address
Opera House, Andrássy út 22, District VI; tours start at the information desk in the entrance hall

Andrássy út runs 2.3 km from the centre to Heroes' Square, lined with late-19th-century mansions and luxury shops, with Metro M1 (opened 1896) running just beneath. Halfway along stands the Opera House, opened in 1884. The English tour takes you up the marble staircase, into the gilded auditorium and under the ceiling frescoes, and finishes with a young soloist in costume singing a short piece on the staircase landing. If you'd rather see a show, the cheapest seats cost less than the tour.
