In the middle of the Tiergarten, a 210-hectare forest park in the heart of the city, a column topped by a gilded Victory (Berliners call her 'Goldelse') stands on a busy roundabout. Climb 285 narrow spiral steps to the platform at her feet, about 51 m up, for the dead-straight Straße des 17. Juni running to the Brandenburg Gate through a sea of trees. Back down, wander the park's lakes or rest at a beer garden by the English Garden. It's the column the angel sits on in Wings of Desire.
