The sand runs out along the sea edge of La Barceloneta, the old fishermen's quarter. Cyclists and runners use the promenade rebuilt for the 1992 Olympics, and the sail-shaped W hotel stands alone at the south end. Until about May the water is too cold for most people, so it is a place to stroll; on a midsummer afternoon you will struggle to find room for a towel. For seafood paella, people tend to recommend the backstreets over the beachfront.
