For over 400 years this was the capital of Siam, until the Burmese burned it in 1767. Red-brick prangs and headless Buddhas lie scattered across the fields, and at Wat Mahathat you'll find the famous Buddha head cradled in banyan roots. Most visitors take the afternoon 'sunset tour': the big chedi and reclining Buddha at Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, then Wat Mahathat, a boat on the river for sunset, and a photo stop outside a floodlit Wat Chaiwatthanaram before heading back.
