In the middle of Ubud is 12.5 hectares of tropical forest where around a thousand long-tailed macaques live in seven troops. Paths wind over mossy stone bridges and between banyan roots to three temples tucked in the trees. Monkeys stroll past your feet, groom each other on the railings and tumble about with their babies a metre away. Staff feed them on a schedule, and most people find them calmer than Uluwatu's, but they still go for bag charms and water bottles.
