Kilometres of sand and steady, even waves make this Bali's classic place to learn to surf. Surf shops line the beach road; you rent a board and rash vest, practise popping up on the sand, then an instructor pushes you into waves in water shallow enough to stand in. One-to-one lessons cost far less than at home, so many people slot one into a trip. Late in the afternoon surfers and strollers sit on the sand to watch the sun go into the sea, which costs nothing at all.
