Tours start from the visitor centre in Waitomo village

A guide leads you for about 45 minutes through limestone chambers hung with stalactites, then you step into a small boat and slide out onto an underground river in total darkness. There's no paddling, just a guide pulling along a rope, and when you look up the ceiling is packed with blue pinpricks like the Milky Way. They're the larvae of an insect found only in New Zealand. Those few minutes of everyone holding their breath are the whole point.
