Drive south along the coast from Athens for over an hour and there's a row of white columns standing on a cliff that sticks out into the sea. It was built for Poseidon in the 5th century BC, and it was the first sign of home for sailors heading back to Athens. Everyone comes late in the day for the moment the sun drops into the sea behind the temple and red light leaks between the columns. Look for the name Lord Byron is said to have carved into one of them.
