Pull away from Centraal, turn into the Herengracht, and you notice what you can't see from the pavement: the houses lean forward on purpose, so furniture hauled up on the hook at the top doesn't scrape the facade. Bikes rattle overhead every time you slide under a bridge, and the guide always pauses where seven bridges line up in a row. After dark the bridges are outlined in bulbs and the same route looks like a different city.
