Address
The free-standing red-brick tower in front of the basilica, on the south side of the square; the entrance is by the Loggetta at its base

The tallest thing on the square, a red-brick tower you go up by lift, no stairs, to the belfry. From the top the basilica's domes are right under your feet, and past the Doge's Palace roof you see San Giorgio Maggiore and the open lagoon. The maze of lanes you've been lost in all day turns into a sea of red roofs. The tower you're standing in is a rebuild: the original collapsed in 1902 and was put back up in the same shape. The bells ring right above you on the hour, so pick your time if you're sensitive to noise.
