Ulaanbaatar itineraries
Gandan to the Square
Start with morning chanting at Gandan, work through the Chinggis Khaan museum, climb the Zaisan steps late in the day, then finish with throat singing and a beer. For a first day in Ulaanbaatar, this order wastes the least time.
The Giant Khan and a Terelj Ger
Day one heads east to stand on the head of the 40-metre horseman, passes Turtle Rock and ends with mutton and stars at a ger camp. Day two comes back for the palace, the national museum and Narantuul market. One night on the steppe is the point of coming to Mongolia.
Art, Wild Horses, Bogd Khan
Based at a hotel north of the square: galleries and the opera on day one, the takhi wild horses of Hustai on day two, a ridge walk on Bogd Khan mountain and cashmere shopping on day three. The combination for a second visit, once the downtown museums are done.
