A YHA on The Rocks hill, one block below the Shangri-La. It was built over an excavated site of early Sydney homes, and the ground floor keeps the dig on show; up on the rooftop terrace the Opera House and Harbour Bridge sit in one view. In a neighbourhood where hotels easily pass US$275 a night, a bed in a six-bed dorm was AUD 89–109 on our dates. There are also private rooms with their own bathroom for two or three, which suit a parent travelling with a grown-up child.
