A tropical botanic garden opened in 1859 and listed by UNESCO in 2015. In through Tanglin Gate come giant tembusu trees, Palm Valley, Swan Lake with its swans and the white octagonal Bandstand, while lizards cross the paths and nobody blinks. Almost all of it is free; only the National Orchid Garden inside charges, and reviewers say the vine-covered arches and endless orchid beds are worth it. Pairing it with brunch at a café up the road in Dempsey Hill is the classic route.
