Inside, the vault is so high that people turn into ants. It was built on the site of a mosque and is one of the largest Gothic churches anywhere; the gilded wooden altarpiece is hard to take in even with your head tipped right back. By the south door, four kings of Spain's old kingdoms carry Columbus's coffin on their shoulders. The Giralda bell tower started life as a minaret, so you climb thirty-odd ramps built for horses rather than stairs, and from the top the Alcázar gardens and the city's rooftops spread out below. The same ticket gets you into the Church of El Salvador.
