Japanese colonial authorities built this prison in 1908 and held independence fighters here; Yu Gwan-sun died inside it. The red-brick cell blocks, a basement exhibition recreating torture scenes, and an execution room still stand. It is quiet and heavy, and people talk less without being told to. It is one of the places in Seoul where modern Korean history feels closest.
