Laugavegur & Rainbow Street

Laugavegur & Skólavörðustígur (Regnbogagatan)

A rainbow-painted hill street and the city's main shopping strip

Hours
Varies by shop (roughly 10:00–18:00); bars stay open late
Address
Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur, 101 Reykjavík

Skólavörðustígur runs downhill from Hallgrímskirkja with a rainbow painted along the tarmac, so from the bottom you get the church sitting at the end of the stripes. Crossing below it is Laugavegur, Reykjavík's oldest shopping street: wool jumper shops, outdoor gear, record stores, cafés and bars squeezed between tin-clad houses, with murals on half the walls. On Friday and Saturday nights the queues outside the bars change the mood completely.
