Silverlake, rows of vines running down to a lake beneath the hills, is one of Thailand's rare vineyards. You wander between European-style buildings and flowerbeds and stop for grape juice, wine or ice cream; it's a regular on package tours. A few minutes away, Khao Chi Chan is a sheer limestone cliff with a seated Buddha outlined in gold across its face, made in 1996 for the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol's reign. Look up at it from across the pond in front and the scale sinks in. Both are free, so they pair well as a half-day drive.
