Walk down the steps from the gate and an enormous wooden building, its back to the sea, suddenly fills your whole view. Gods, animals and celestial figures cover every wall, pillar and gable, and up close it smells of fresh timber. Construction started in 1981 and never stopped, so you'll often see carvers working on new panels. Free guided tours (Thai, English, Russian, Chinese) take you inside and explain what each level depicts. The grounds also have carriage rides, elephants, a small zoo and a woodcarving corner.
