This shopping town grew up next to the US bases, and it shows, from the architecture to the signs. Around Depot Island every alley is murals and candy-coloured walls, and the seawall promenade is lined with cafés and burger joints. The real show is sunset: the sun drops into the sea off Sunset Beach next door, the boardwalk goes orange, and then the buildings light up. It sits halfway up the island, so it's an easy dinner stop on a drive north.
