Step into the yellow French-era institute building and sharks and turtles are circling slowly in open-air seawater tanks. The museum belongs to the oceanographic institute founded here in 1922, so the galleries behind are lined with specimens, fish and coral in jars and a big whale skeleton, more than 20,000 pieces in all. It's not a glossy aquarium, but kids tend to get stuck in front of the seahorse and lionfish tanks. A new 'Mysterious Ocean' gallery opened in September 2025.
