A hotel on a low rise at the south end of Nara Park, right above the old Daijo-in garden. It opened in 1909; the timber main building wears a Japanese tiled roof over Western-style interiors, very much a Meiji-era idea. Einstein stayed here, and the hotel doesn't let you forget it. Walk out early and you are on the deer paths of the park in five minutes. Rooms split between the main building and the newer west wing, so check which one you are booking.
