Opened in the early 1600s as a library and picture gallery, it's compact but dense with masterpieces. Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit is smaller than you'd think, down to the worm-eaten leaves; Raphael's full-size cartoon for The School of Athens fills an entire room. There's Leonardo's Portrait of a Musician, plus rotating sheets from his Codex Atlanticus notebooks, and the old reading room lined with antique books is a sight on its own.
