Lisbon itineraries

Belém to Alfama in a day

Start with a custard tart still warm from the oven, see the tower and monastery by the river, ride the yellow tram up the hill, watch the sun go down over Alfama's rooftops and finish with fado. If you only get one day in Lisbon, this order wastes the least of it.

Hills one day, Sintra the next

Day one strings the hill neighbourhoods together on foot, Chiado to Graça. Day two is a 40-minute train out to a painted palace above a misty forest and the cliff at the western edge of mainland Europe, with sunset on the beach at Cascais.

River, hills and sea in three days

Day one climbs from a Baixa hotel up through Alfama to sunset. Day two is the Belém riverside and the factory district under the bridge. Day three is rain-proof, the aquarium and the Gulbenkian, and ends straight at the airport.
