From a distance it looks like a stone crown set down on the sea. Climb the steps and, just as you start to puff, Seongsan village and Udo line up behind you; at the top a vast grassy bowl of a crater opens at your feet. Because the gates open before dawn for much of the year, plenty of people make the climb in the dark for sunrise. On the way down, branch off to the Umugae coast for the haenyeo diving show and a side-on view of the peak.
