Slip between the hotels on Kalakaua Avenue and you're on the sand, with Diamond Head framed at the eastern end. At Kuhio Beach a stone breakwater knocks the bigger waves down, so kids can splash around knee-deep. Surfers paddle out from first light, and at sunset everyone just sits on the sand and watches the horizon. If you're staying in Waikiki, you'll keep drifting back here every free hour.
