Turn a corner and two soot-darkened towers block the end of the lane. Built in 1886 under French rule and modelled loosely on Notre-Dame de Paris, it's Hanoi's oldest church. The interior opens only at set times, and red Vietnamese decorative touches under the stained glass give it a feel no European cathedral has. The square in front is ringed with tra chanh (iced lemon tea) stalls on plastic stools and cafés, and sitting there with a glass while staring up at the towers is how the neighbourhood does it.
