In the 13th century King Tran Nhan Tong gave up his throne, came to this mountain and founded the Truc Lam school of Vietnamese Zen; it's still one of the country's holiest Buddhist sites. Sectional cable cars carry you most of the way up the 1,000-plus-metre peak with a change in between, and you hop off to see temples and stupa gardens along the way. The final stretch is stone steps, so expect a real walk. At the small bronze Dong Pagoda on top, clouds often drift past below your feet. From Lunar New Year through the third lunar month the whole mountain is packed with pilgrims.
