You come out of a lane onto green lawns set with a white marble cathedral, a baptistery and a bell tower leaning more than you expected. Along the edge of the grass, people line up with palms raised to 'hold up' the tower, and watching them is half the fun. Climbing the spiral stairs inside, you feel yourself tipped to one side. Everything is on one square, so half a day is enough, and many people head back to Florence in the afternoon or carry on to Lucca or the Cinque Terre.
