The Republic of Dubrovnik began these walls in 1333 to protect its salt pans. They run up and over the ridge between Ston and Mali Ston, 5.5 km in all, earning the nickname 'the European Great Wall'. The steps along the top are steep, and you'll be puffing by the summit tower, but on one side the salt pans lie in a neat grid and on the other the bay is dotted with oyster-farm buoys. Back down in Mali Ston, harbourside restaurants serve oysters pulled from the bay in front of you with a wedge of lemon; they've held EU protected-origin status since 2020.
