Hoi An is a trading port from the 15th to 19th centuries that kept most of its old houses. By day you wander mustard-yellow lanes past wooden shutters, assembly halls and the roofed Japanese Bridge; after dark every shopfront lights its silk lanterns and the same streets look like another town. On the river, small wooden boats take you out to set a paper candle lantern on the water, which has become the standard finale of a night here. Across the bridge on An Hoi, a night market sets up every evening.
