Step through the gate and a lawn full of whitewashed chedis stands in rows, with the ridge of Doi Suthep rising behind them. Each white stupa holds the ashes of members of the old Lanna royal family. Go near sunset and the walls turn orange, which is when photographers show up. Inside, the main hall has a big bronze Buddha, and a Buddhist university next door means young monks in saffron robes cross the grounds between classes.
