It began as a summer palace for Queen Sophie Charlotte and kept growing for generations into this long yellow building. The Old Palace has a porcelain cabinet and a run of gilded royal apartments; the New Wing holds Frederick the Great's ballrooms and paintings. Out the back, a formal Baroque garden gives way to a lake and woodland paths, a half-day stroll on its own. Being out west, away from the Mitte sights, it's noticeably calmer.
