Niujie Mosque

牛街礼拜寺

A mosque from 996 in Chinese-style halls

Address
88 Niujie, Xicheng (some listings say No. 18), in the middle of the Hui quarter

Red pillars and tiled eaves make it look like a temple until you spot the crescent on the roof. Tradition dates it to 996, making it the oldest mosque in Beijing. The streets around it are the Hui quarter, lined with lamb butchers and pastry shops. The prayer hall is for worshippers only; the courtyards and side halls are open to visitors.
